About me

Lily van Pelt

Hi there!
I’m Lily, the face behind SewingSafari. My sewing journey began when I was about 12 years old. My grandmother taught me the basics, but everything else I’ve learned has been thanks to YouTube. Whenever something went wrong (which happened a lot!), I’d head back to YouTube, watch tutorials, and try again. That’s how I’ve taught myself everything I know about sewing—one mistake at a time.

I’ll be honest: I still make a ton of mistakes! Most of the time, it’s because I’m rushing or not paying enough attention to the details. Sewing is a hobby for me, not a profession, and I’m very much still learning as I go. There have even been long periods where I didn’t sew at all, followed by bursts of creativity where I couldn’t stop.

I started SewingSafari because I want to help other beginners—whether they’re girls, boys, or anyone else—discover the joy of sewing. One thing I found challenging when I was starting out was the lack of free patterns. I didn’t want to spend €10 on a pattern when I wasn’t even sure I’d get it right. So here, you’ll find free patterns and resources to help you get started without breaking the bank.

I also still sew on the same sewing machine I bought for just €70. That’s another thing I struggled with when watching videos from experienced sewists—they often used tools I couldn’t afford, like sergers. I want to show you that you don’t need fancy equipment to start sewing. If I can do it, so can you!

SewingSafari is a space for amateurs like me, made by an amateur who’s still learning every day. Let’s embrace the imperfections, share our progress, and most importantly, have fun along the way.
